Titans

The children of Gaea and Ouranos, led by Kronos in a war against Olympus.

The Titans are the children of Gaea and Ouranos. Most of them fought against the gods during the Titanomachy, which ended with the gods winning. In Percy Jackson & the Olympians, their king Kronos, the Lord of Time, is the main antagonist: initially trapped in Tartarus, he escapes to possess Luke Castellan and personally leads the Titan army against Olympus.

Lore & Background

Kronos castrated his father Ouranos before cutting him to pieces, and Ouranos cursed him, stating that his child would overthrow him just as he had. Rhea, the queen of the Titans and mother of the elder Olympians, kept Zeus from being eaten. Atlas is the general of the Titan army; he was imprisoned on Mount Tamalpais near San Francisco, cursed to hold up the sky, and was the primary antagonist of The Titan's Curse, at whose end Percy and Artemis trap him beneath the sky again. In The Last Olympian, Kronos is finally defeated by his own host, Luke, in fulfillment of the first Great Prophecy; Hermes states that Kronos cannot be killed and is instead scattered so thin that he can hopefully never form a consciousness again.

Reader's Guide

Other Titans of the series include Hyperion, the Titan of the East, who battles Percy in The Last Olympian and is trapped by Grover, who turns him into a tree; Oceanus, the Titan of the Ocean, who besieges Poseidon's underwater palace; Krios, the Lord of the South, whom Jason Grace defeats on Mount Othrys; Koios, the Lord of the North; and Iapetus, the Lord of the West, who loses his memory in the River Lethe and becomes Percy's friend Bob. At the end of the war, Percy asks the gods to give amnesty to innocent Titans.
