Sanji was born as Vinsmoke Sanji, a prince of Germa Kingdom, a floating kingdom composed of several ships on the shells of large snails. His father, Vinsmoke Judge, sought to regain the family's lost glory by creating the strongest army, experimenting on his five children. Sanji's mother, Sora, tried to undo the experiments by taking a powerful drug, but only Sanji was affected, leaving him without powers and able to feel emotions. Judge deemed Sanji a "failure," imprisoned him, and Sanji was perpetually tortured and bullied by his brothers. After leaving his family and surviving a shipwreck, he was taken in by Zeff, who taught him cooking and his fighting style. Sanji joined the Straw Hats after a battle against Don Krieg to fulfill his dream of finding the All Blue, a mythical sea said to have fish from around the world.

In Their Own Story

Sanji is mostly seen as a composed, nonchalant, and calm individual who keeps his cool in dire situations, contrasted by comedic gags when in the presence of a lady or when insulted by a crew member. He has a great rivalry with Zoro, often resorting to fighting both verbally and physically. He constantly flirts with attractive women, earning him the nickname "ero-cook," and shows jealousy toward those luckier with women. Despite this, he exhibits self-restraint due to loyalty to his crew, as shown when he sternly refused to marry Pudding. He follows a strict code of chivalry, swearing never to attack women, even at the cost of his own life, as seen when he only blocked against Kalifa until Nami could help. He overcame his childhood trauma after Luffy saved him from an arranged marriage during the Whole Cake Island Arc. Sanji is kind and often saves others, framing it as chivalry but consistently helping men as well. Having suffered starvation, he never denies a person a meal regardless of their intentions, as shown when Don Krieg attempted to take over the Baratie. He frequently separates from the crew to play a clandestine role, such as in Water 7 finding Nico Robin boarding the Puffing Tom, in Thriller Bark offering to give up his life for Luffy's, in Zou deciding to leave the crew to protect them, and in Wano asking Robin to save him—the first time he asked for help.

Reader's Guide

Sanji's fighting style relies exclusively on kicks, never punching, because a cook's hands must be protected. His attacks are variations of kicks deemed "Black Leg Style," with names usually related to food, such as "Diable Jambe," where he raises his legs' temperature so high they glow bright red. On Momoiro Island, he learned "Sky Walk," allowing him to jump to great heights and float mid-air by making sonic booms. He is one of the few high-bounty individuals without a Devil Fruit. After Whole Cake Island, he received a Raid Suit from Germa 66 that increased his physical capabilities and allowed him to blend in with his environment. Continued use awakened his inert genetic modifications, which he ultimately accepted, giving him increased strength and speed, but he destroyed the Raid Suit to cut ties with his family permanently. He later used his new abilities with Armament Haki to create "Ifrit Jambe," a more powerful version of Diable Jambe using blue-white flames. During the timeskip, he developed Observation Haki, allowing him to sense intent and presence, such as dodging a jelly bean bullet from Katakuri, and Armament Haki to harden parts of his body and attack Logia users. As a cook, he learned under Zeff on the Baratie, becoming quick and dexterous with knives, and has a strong sense of taste and smell, able to deduce ingredients and recreate the wedding cake on Whole Cake Island.

• Sanji's first appearance was in the 43rd chapter of One Piece, published in Japan on June 8, 1998.
• Oda was inspired by Mr. Pink, Steve Buscemi's character in Reservoir Dogs (1992), when creating Sanji.
• Sanji's real-world nationality would be a Frenchman, in contrast to the Nazi Germany themes of Germa 66.
• In the live-action adaptation, Sanji is portrayed by British-Spanish actor Taz Skylar, who performed his own stunts despite sustaining injuries.
• Sanji's distinctive curly eyebrow was not included in the live-action adaptation to ground the show and make it feel more real.
