Background

As a junior member of the Roger Pirates he got hold of a Devil Fruit and a treasure map, but Shanks accidentally made him swallow the fruit and drop the map into the sea, and Buggy has resented him ever since. The fruit was the Chop-Chop Fruit, a Paramecia type that lets him split his body into floating parts that he controls separately as long as they stay close and one foot stays on the ground, which also makes him immune to cutting attacks. After the Roger Pirates break up he captains the Buggy Pirates as "Buggy the Clown". His part in the first mass breakout from Impel Down and in the Paramount War brings him a large following of escapees, worldwide fame as "The Genius Jester" and a seat among the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Oda has said Buggy is his favourite antagonist because he is the easiest of them to draw.
