This sea slug is found in the tropical central and western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, at depths down to about 50 m (160 ft). It was first described from the Philippines, and its name is often mistakenly applied to *Phyllidiopsis xishaensis*. *Phyllidiella striata* feeds on sponges, lacking a radula, jaws, and stomach. Instead, it everts part of its gut, using digestive enzymes to break down sponge tissue externally and then sucking in the liquefied product. Like all nudibranchs, it is a hermaphrodite, with a genital pore on the right side of the foot just behind the head. During mating, two individuals align facing opposite directions and exchange sperm, after which each can produce eggs. There is no larval stage; embryos undergo direct development into juveniles. To deter predators, this species exudes a milky-white substance containing terpenes from its dorsal gland, which it derives from toxic compounds in the sponges it eats.
