Magi

NERV's three supercomputers, built with three sides of Naoko Akagi's personality.

The Magi are a trio of supercomputers that help NERV fight the Angels. Housed in the Central Tactical Command Room of NERV Headquarters, the three machines work together to control, manage and automate NERV HQ's key systems, and each has its own personality, so they often propose different solutions to the same problem.

Background

Sometimes all the solutions are passed on and humans make the final call; for major decisions such as self-destruction the three Magi must agree. Dr. Naoko Akagi designed them at Gehirn and implanted each with one side of her own personality: Melchior as a scientist, Balthasar as a mother and Casper as a woman. Each looks like a compact, red-topped white block that can be raised hydraulically for maintenance, and inside, past the tubes and access tunnels, are parts resembling human brains. The Magi run training simulations, synchronisation tests, combat operations, security and research, are among NERV's most valuable assets, and also help run Tokyo-3 and the Japanese government. In The End of Evangelion Casper overrides Ritsuko's self-destruct command.
