Evangelion Unit-01 is the first non-prototype Evangelion, designated 'EVA-01 TEST TYPE', and the flagship unit of the series. It is mainly piloted by Shinji Ikari and houses the soul of his mother, Yui Ikari.

Background
Under its armour, which also restrains its real strength, Unit-01 is a giant with brown skin, a human-like mouth and two round green eyes. The armour is mostly purple with green stripes, and its helmet has a single prominent horn, recalling a one-horned oni. Like other Evas it can go berserk, acting beyond anyone's control. When the dummy system is used on it against the Angel Bardiel, it destroys Unit-03, and after its fight with Zeruel it takes in that Angel's S2 Engine.
