Evangelion Unit-00 is the first functional Evangelion, designated 'EVA-00 PROTO TYPE' as the prototype for the rest of the series. It is piloted by Rei Ayanami.

Background
Its helmet resembles those of the failed prototypes in the Eva Graveyard, with a single 'camera' eye and a green dome that glows when it activates. It is the only one of the main three Evas never seen without its armour, so its organic body is unknown. Its armour was first yellowish-orange like the earlier prototypes, but after Ramiel's beam badly damaged it during Operation Yashima it was repaired and upgraded with blue plating and shoulder pylons, making it look more like the other units. Gendo Ikari's gloves hide hands burned during an earlier Unit-00 berserk incident. Its last sortie was against the sixteenth Angel, Armisael, which broke through its A.T. Field and tried to fuse with it. To keep the Angel away from Unit-01, Rei drew Armisael into Unit-00's core and self-destructed the unit; its badly damaged entry plug was found afterwards, but the pilot did not survive.
