Kaworu Nagisa is the Fifth Child and the seventeenth Angel, coming after Armisael. SEELE sends him to NERV as a replacement pilot for Unit-02 after Asuka's synchronisation ratio falls too low to use.

Background
Like Rei Ayanami, Kaworu is a Seed of Life living in a human body, and he does not see himself as human, calling people 'the Lilin'. He is first seen humming the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the 'Ode to Joy', which also plays as he descends into Terminal Dogma and serves as his leitmotif. He breaks into Terminal Dogma to return to Adam, but on finding that the being there is actually Lilith, he lets Shinji destroy him. He appears again with Rei in The End of Evangelion during Third Impact, talking with Shinji about whether to accept or reject Instrumentality.
