N² Technology

Non-nuclear weapons and reactors with nuclear-level power, used against the Angels.

N² Technology (N² for 'non-nuclear') covers a family of weapons and reactors in the Evangelion series. N² weapons are the strongest conventional, non-Evangelion weapons humanity has made: as powerful as nuclear bombs and able to give off electromagnetic pulses, but without radioactive fallout.

Background

They come as bombs, depth charges, land mines, aerial weapons and missiles, and Japan's military holds almost a thousand of them. They can damage weaker Angels, as in Sachiel's and Israfel's attacks on Tokyo-3, and buy NERV time, but they never destroy an Angel on their own, and several blasts fail to affect others. Because they are so destructive and leave large craters, the military uses them near populated areas only as a last resort. In episode 19 Unit-00 carries one against Zeruel inside NERV Headquarters; it costs the Eva its right arm and leaves the Angel unharmed. N² reactors give nuclear-level power without fission and are small and stable enough to be mounted on combat equipment.
