Evangelion Unit-04
The American-built Evangelion lost with NERV's Nevada branch in an S² Engine test.
Evangelion Unit-04 was an Evangelion built in the United States at NERV's Second Branch in Nevada. It never appears on screen in the TV series and is only mentioned, from episode 17 on; promotional art and figures show it as a silver or chrome version of Unit-03.

Background
Unit-04 was the test bed for fitting an S² Engine into an ordinary Evangelion. During the experiment something went wrong with the engine, and Unit-04, the branch it was in and everything for tens of kilometres around were swallowed by a Dirac Sea. The experiment failed, but the S² Engine was later made to work in the Mass Production Evangelions. In the manga Kensuke Aida mentions in passing that Unit-04 was lost, and in the spin-off manga Angelic Days Kensuke is its designated pilot until Kaworu Nagisa takes his place.
