Background
Bardiel hid in a thundercloud, and its fungus-like infection spread into Unit-03's systems, revealing itself when the Eva was activated at NERV's secondary testing facility at Matsushiro; the infected unit set off an explosion that partly destroyed the base and then headed for Tokyo-3. It could spread its infection further, as when it seeped infected ooze from its arm into Unit-00. Though not one of the strongest Angels, it has a huge impact on the cast: NERV has Unit-01 destroy it, nearly killing the pilot Tōji Suzuhara (in the manga, Tōji dies).
