After a few D-ranked jobs, their first serious mission under Kakashi Hatake is to escort the bridge builder Tazuna to the Land of Waves, where they are ambushed by Zabuza Momochi, a rogue ninja of the Hidden Mist Village. The confrontation grows into a fight for survival against Zabuza and his masked follower Haku, both in the pay of the criminal Gato. Through this conflict, Naruto learns the value of true teamwork and the weight of protecting others. The arc ends with the deaths of Haku and Zabuza, whom Team 7 buries, and with Naruto declaring that he will follow his own ninja way.
