Background
Thousands of years before the trilogy, Tuchanka was teeming with life: thick jungles of tree-analogues and highly competitive fauna grew under the heat of its sun, Aralakh. Its hostile environment shaped the krogan and kept their numbers in balance until their industrial age. Nuclear war over dwindling habitable land irradiated the planet, and the nuclear winter that followed killed off much of the remaining plant life while the surviving krogan retreated underground. The salarians later offered terraforming technology to stabilise its ruined atmosphere.
Native wildlife includes the dog-like varren, crab-like klixen and the giant subterranean thresher maws. Eurogamer's Tom Phillips picked Priority: Tuchanka in Mass Effect 3 as the finest moment of the trilogy.
Shepard may visit Tuchanka in Mass Effect 2 as part of Grunt's storyline, meeting Urdnot Wrex or his half-brother Urdnot Wreav as leader of Clan Urdnot. In Mass Effect 3, a cure for the genophage is to be dispersed from the Shroud structure on Tuchanka, and the thresher maw Kalros helps repel the Reaper invasion there.
