Lore & Background

A few Protheans survived the last extinction cycle in cryopreservation on Ilos. They later re-entered the Citadel through the Conduit, a reverse-engineered miniature mass relay disguised on the station as a statue, and sabotaged the Citadel so that the Reapers could not activate it remotely.

Reader's Guide

Ilos is where the Protheans first appear in the series, as visually ambiguous statues, because BioWare had not yet decided how large their role would be.

Relieved of command by Udina, Shepard takes the Normandy to Ilos with Anderson's help. There a Prothean virtual intelligence named Vigil reveals that the Citadel is an enormous mass relay the Reapers use to invade the galaxy, and that Saren means to undo the Protheans' sabotage. Shepard then follows Saren through the Conduit to the Citadel.
