Background

The salarians are known for their scientific and intellectual prowess and their covert operations group, the Special Tasks Group (STG), on which the Council's Spectre program is based. About 2,000 years before the first game they uplifted the krogan to fight the rachni; when the krogan later rebelled, the salarians developed the genophage, which the turians deployed. Four hundred years before humanity joined galactic society, the batarians bombed the salarian world of Mannovai.

Mordin Solus, a former STG member who helped strengthen the genophage, is the series' best-known salarian.

In the first Mass Effect an STG unit under Captain Kirrahe uncovers Saren's base on Virmire. In Mass Effect 3 the salarian leader reveals that the Shroud on Tuchanka has been sabotaged to stop a genophage cure, and offers support only if the sabotage is left in place.
