T'Challa's journey began as a prince protecting Wakanda, an isolated African nation rich in vibranium. Upon ascending the throne after his father T'Chaka's death, he faced immediate challenges from within and without. He encountered Helmut Zemo, who orchestrated the Avengers' civil war to destroy them from the inside; T'Challa subdued Zemo but chose mercy over revenge, granting Captain America and Winter Soldier sanctuary in Wakanda. His reign was defined by a conflict with his cousin Erik Stevens (Killmonger), who usurped the throne using stolen technology. T'Challa reclaimed his crown and thwarted Stevens' plan to use Wakanda's resources for global conquest. Later, during the conflict against Thanos, he led Wakandan armies alongside the Avengers before falling victim to the Blip, only to be restored by Scott Lang and others in time for a final victory.

In Their Own Story

Chadwick Boseman first appeared as T'Challa in 'Captain America: Civil War' (2016), driven by revenge for his father's death at the UN signing of the Sokovia Accords. He initially joined Tony Stark's faction to capture Steve Rogers but learned the bombing was actually arranged by Helmut Zemo to turn the Avengers against each other. After hearing Zemo's confession, T'Challa renounced his revenge and handed the villain over to Everett K. Ross. In 'Black Panther' (2018), he completed the ritual of succession only to face opposition from Erik Stevens. The duo clashed, leading to a struggle for Wakanda's future where T'Challa ultimately won back the throne. He later appeared in 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Endgame', where he improvised war chants with fellow actors that director Joe Russo found "incredibly cool." Following Boseman's death from colon cancer in August 2020, the character was written to die of an unspecified illness in 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', leading Shuri to become the new Black Panther.
