Strange's journey began when he was a wealthy but arrogant surgeon whose career ended after a car crash left him unable to operate. He vainly pursued experimental surgeries until learning of Jonathan Pangborn, a paraplegic who had mysteriously regained use of his legs. This led Strange to Kamar-Taj, where Mordo rescued him from thieves and the Ancient One revealed dimensions like the Mirror Dimension. Initially reminding her of the renegade sorcerer Kaecilius, Strange studied under the Ancient One and Mordo. He mastered spells with "tongue-twisty fun names," creating light mandalas for shields and portals for travel. Aided by a Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto—a relic containing an Infinity Stone that manipulates time—Strange became a Master of the Mystic Arts. Later, he served as the reasonable adult in the room during conflicts with Thanos, allowing the villain to initiate the Blip to ensure ultimate victory five years later.

In Their Own Story

Upon returning from the Blip, Strange found Wong had become Sorcerer Supreme, a position Strange was inheriting from the Ancient One prior to his death. Strange remained the Guardian of the New York Sanctum while facing new multiverse threats. These included a rift caused by an interrupted attempt to erase everyone's knowledge of Peter Parker's identity after Mysterio's actions, and a Darkhold-corrupted Wanda Maximoff seeking America Chavez's ability to traverse realities. The character also faces alternate versions: a heroic Earth-617 Strange from What If...?, the former Sorcerer Supreme of Earth-838 who founded the Illuminati, and a Darkhold-corrupted version in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Cumberbatch is set to return as the character in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
