The Petrification Disease
The illness that blinds and kills Krat, and turns some into Carcasses.
This condition is linked to a secret directive added by Geppetto into the Covenant.[1]
How it changed
Geppetto's secret directive allowed him nearly-unlimited control of most Puppets.[1] Some Puppets developed awakened "Ego" that let them bypass the Covenant's restrictions.[1] These sentient Puppets could become revived versions of dead Humans powered by Ergo.[1] The King of Puppets was the revived Puppet of Romeo, Carlo's best friend.[1]
The King tried to warn P of Geppetto's deception before his death.[1] A post-credits scene reveals Giangio is actually Philippus Paracelsus, a crafty deceiver.[2] Paracelsus labels sentient Puppets "a new type of humanity".[2] Someone clicks their heels thrice on a rooftop in Krat.[2]
What the maker and period sources say
