Halloween Resurrection (2002)
Michael Myers returns to his childhood home, now the set of a live internet horror show.
Halloween: Resurrection, released in 2002, is an American slasher film directed by Rick Rosenthal, with a screenplay by Larry Brand and Sean Hood. It serves as the direct follow-up to Halloween H20: 20 Years Later from 1998 and marks the eighth movie in the Halloween series. The cast includes Busta Rhymes, Bianca Kajlich, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Ryan Merriman, Sean Patrick Thomas, Tyra Banks, and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Brad Loree portraying Michael Myers. This film concludes the H20 timeline within the franchise, which had been rebooted just four years earlier with the 1998 installment, only to be rebooted again in 2007 via a remake and once more in 2018. The story follows Michael Myers as he continues his killing spree in Haddonfield after his childhood home becomes the setting for a live internet horror show.
Released by Dimension Films on July 12, 2002, Halloween: Resurrection was heavily criticized, with reviewers calling it an unnecessary sequel to Halloween H20 and ranking it among the worst entries in the Halloween franchise. Despite earning $37.6 million worldwide against a $15 million budget, which technically makes it a box office success, it was seen as a financial disappointment compared to its predecessor, which grossed $75 million. The next film in the series was a 2007 remake of the original 1978 movie, directed by Rob Zombie.
The plot begins three years after the events at Hillcrest Academy. Laurie Strode, consumed by guilt, is confined to Grace Andersen Sanitarium. It turns out the person she decapitated, whom she believed was Michael Myers, was actually a paramedic Michael had swapped clothes with and left unable to speak. Expecting her brother to return, Laurie sets a trap on the sanitarium roof. Michael kills two guards and chases her to the rooftop, where the trap works and briefly stops him. But Laurie hesitates, afraid she might kill the wrong person again. When she tries to remove his mask to confirm his identity, Michael stabs her and throws her off the roof to her death.
A year later, college students Sara Moyer, Bill Woodlake, Donna Chang, Jen Danzig, Jim Morgan, and Rudy Grimes win a chance to appear on an internet reality show called Dangertainment, run by Freddie Harris and Nora Winston. The students must spend a night in Michael’s abandoned childhood house to uncover what drove him to kill. While setting up cameras, cameraman Charlie is killed by Michael, who has returned to Haddonfield. On Halloween night, the students enter the house wearing head cameras and split into three groups to search for clues.
Meanwhile, Myles "Deckard" Barton watches the live broadcast at a party. Michael soon kills Bill. Donna and Jim find a wall of fake corpses and realize the show is staged, then Michael kills Donna. At the party, Deckard and others see the murder, but only Deckard understands it is real.
Freddie enters the house dressed as Michael to scare the contestants, followed by the real Michael, whom Freddie mistakes for Charlie and sends toward the garage where Nora is. When Rudy, Sara, and Jim find Freddie in costume, he admits the scheme and asks them to play along for money. After he leaves, the trio decides to gather everyone and leave. Jen finds Bill’s body, and Michael decapitates her in front of the others.
Michael then kills Jim and Rudy and chases Sara upstairs. Locked in a bedroom, Sara begs Deckard for help. As other partygoers realize the murders are real, Deckard messages Michael’s location to Sara. She runs into Freddie, and Michael stabs him.
Sara escapes through tunnels to the garage, where she finds Nora’s body. Michael attacks her, but Freddie, still alive, fights him as an electrical fire starts. After electrocuting Michael, Freddie carries Sara to safety, leaving Michael to die in the burning garage. Later, Freddie and Sara are interviewed by news reporters; Sara thanks Deckard, and Freddie assaults the reporter.
Michael’s body is taken to the morgue, but he awakens as the coroner begins an examination. In an alternate ending, Sara asks to see the body bag, Michael awakens and chokes Freddie, and Sara kills him by stabbing him in the face with an axe.
The cast includes Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, Brad Loree as Michael Myers, Busta Rhymes as Freddie Harris, Bianca Kajlich as Sara Moyer, Sean Patrick Thomas as Rudy Grimes, Daisy McCrackin as Donna Chang, Katee Sackhoff as Jen Danzig, Luke Kirby as Jim Morgan, Thomas Ian Nicholas as Bill Woodlake, Ryan Merriman as Myles "Deckard" Barton, Tyra Banks as Nora Winston, Gus Lynch as Harold Trumble, Lorena Gale as Nurse Wells, Marisa Rudiak as Nurse Phillips, Brent Chapman as Franklin Munroe, Dan Joffre as Willie Haines, Haig Sutherland as Aron, Brad Sihvon as Charlie Albans, and Rick Rosenthal as Professor Mixter.
During production, the writers of Halloween H20 faced a problem: Jamie Lee Curtis wanted to end the series, but producer Moustapha Akkad had a contract clause preventing Michael Myers from being killed off. According to the Scream Factory Blu-ray, Curtis nearly left the project weeks before filming. Kevin Williamson then devised the paramedic storyline and presented it to Akkad, after which Curtis agreed to participate.
