Chaintech

Taiwanese hardware maker known for motherboards and graphics cards.

Chaintech

Chaintech Technology Corporation, originally founded as Chaintech Computer Co., Ltd. in November 1986, is a Taiwanese hardware maker based in New Taipei. It later operated under the name Walton Chaintech Corporation before settling on its current title. The company is most famous for its motherboards and graphics cards.

The firm started by producing motherboards for IBM-compatible PCs. Through the 1990s and early 2000s, it grew its sales networks across Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America. In 2000, it went public on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Five years later, it teamed up with Huadong Technology, an integrated circuit packaging and testing company, rebranding as Walton Chaintech Corporation and joining the PSA Huake business group. Around that time, it also began making memory modules.

Facing tough competition and industry shakeouts, Chaintech stopped selling mainstream motherboards and graphics cards in 2006. That same year, it launched an EMS division to focus on OEM manufacturing. After a quiet period, Walton Chaintech announced in June 2012 that it would re-enter the motherboard and graphics card markets. It partnered with Chinese graphics card maker Colorful to gradually come back, handling OEM orders and planning to revive its own brand by 2013.

In later years, the company restructured and changed its name to Chaintech Technology Corporation. Its logo now features a bilingual design, reflecting a focus on the Chinese market.

Chaintech’s product lineup has included motherboards, graphics cards, sound cards, modems, memory modules, and other PC peripherals. It sold these under its own brand and through OEM/ODM deals for other companies. After its 2012 comeback, it concentrated on partnerships and regional sales, mainly in China and some overseas markets. More recent products include AI server systems and all-in-one computers.

Lore & Background

Chaintech was established on 17 November 1986 in Taiwan and began as a manufacturer of motherboards for IBM-compatible personal computers. During the 1990s and early 2000s the company expanded distribution channels in Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. In 2000, the company was listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. In 2005, it formed a strategic alliance with Huadong Technology, changing its name to Walton Chaintech Corporation and becoming part of the PSA Huake business group, at which time it also began producing memory modules. Facing intense competition and industry consolidation, Chaintech officially exited the mainstream motherboard and graphics card markets in 2006, and established an EMS division for OEM manufacturing. After several years of reduced activity, Walton Chaintech announced in June 2012 that it would return to the motherboard and graphics card markets, partnering with Chinese graphics card vendor Colorful to gradually re-enter, fulfilling OEM orders and planning to resume its own branding business by 2013. In subsequent years the company reorganized and updated its corporate name to Chaintech Technology Corporation, with a bilingual logo reflecting its focus on the China market.

Reader's Guide

Chaintech's significance lies in its long history as a Taiwanese manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards, a core segment of the PC industry from the 1990s onward. The company's trajectory illustrates the volatility of the hardware market: it expanded globally, listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, and formed a strategic alliance that diversified into memory modules. However, intense competition and industry consolidation forced it to exit its mainstream markets in 2006, shifting to OEM manufacturing. Its 2012 announcement of a return to motherboards and graphics cards, via a partnership with Colorful, shows an attempt to re-enter a changed landscape. Later, the company rebranded to Chaintech Technology Corporation and updated its logo for the China market, while also expanding into AI server products and all-in-one computers. Its legacy is that of a once-prominent brand that adapted through strategic pivots and regional focus.
