Gameplay
The game pits a player-controlled robot against one controlled by the game engine or another human player. The primary buttons perform punches, and holding them unleashes a more powerful attack. After depleting the opponent's energy, the player must press the L and R trigger buttons alternately for a knockout blow. Multiple colored characters are available with different stats, though most are identical; each robot has a unique head in selection but appears the same in-game.
Reception
Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots was widely panned, receiving 1.5/10 from IGN, 2.2/10 from GameSpot, and an aggregate 21/100 on Metacritic, making it the lowest-scoring GBA title on both IGN and Metacritic. Critics cited bland repetitive graphics, a lack of challenge (one reviewer noted the CPU could be beaten with eyes closed), and the absence of a Game Link Cable multiplayer mode. The game's limited modes and short playtime were also criticized, with one comment that everything could be completed in about 20 minutes. GameZone gave a mediocre 5.4/10, suggesting the budget price could partly excuse the issues, and described it as having some fun in short bursts but otherwise being repetitive and mindless.
