Gameplay
The player forms solid-color hexagons, called Hexes, by rotating and combining colored triangles that drop from the top. Each stage requires a set number of Hexes to clear. The game begins with two triangle colors and adds up to eight total. Glowing triangles grant power-ups, such as creating a hole or swapping colors. Solo mode includes progressive levels, with unlockable endless play, sprint, and competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes.
Development
Rotohex was originally released for the Game Boy Advance as Dialhex on July 13, 2006, exclusively in Japan, under the Bit Generations label. It was announced on June 1, 2006. Nintendo offered free copies to 700 Club Nintendo members who owned a Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS in exchange for feedback. Nintendo filed for an ESRB rating for this title in the US. The game was later remade for WiiWare in the Art Style series.
Reception
Critics were split on Rotohex. It earned a 70 out of 100 on Metacritic and a 71 percent on GameRankings, each based on seven reviews, signaling average reception. IGN gave it an 8 out of 10, praising its "unbelievable addictiveness" and calling it a great "zone out" puzzle game. IGN also nominated it for Best Puzzle Game for the Wii in its 2008 awards.
