Plot
After a trip to the Mojoverse, the X-Men come home to find the X-Mansion in ruins. They realize they have landed in an alternate reality where the villain Apocalypse rules. To get back to their own world, they must fight through his forces, which include Sentinels and brainwashed mutants. The game’s levels feature comic-accurate locations like the Blackbird and Genosha. Players control Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, or Rogue, each with unique powers. Bosses include classic foes like Blob and Magneto, while allies like Colossus and Nightcrawler appear as enemies on Apocalypse’s side.
Gameplay
X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse is a side-scrolling beat 'em up where players fight through twelve stages. Each stage contains multiple enemy waves and ends with a mutant boss that must be beaten to advance. Defeating foes earns points, which can be used between levels to boost a character's strength, vitality, or mutant power. While all four playable characters share the same basic moves, each has a distinct special: Wolverine's claws are best up close, Rogue can charge, Storm fires tornado projectiles, and Cyclops uses long-range optic blasts. The game supports two-player cooperative play in campaign mode or head-to-head battles in a competitive mode.
