Gameplay
Mech Platoon follows real-time strategy conventions similar to StarCraft and Command & Conquer. The player commands one of three nations across five planets with multiple missions. Battles involve gathering Energy Sand, Material Rock, and Laser Crystal to build bases and produce Mechs. Lower-grade resources can be traded for higher-grade ones. A 30-unit cap per stage and no fog of war exist due to hardware limits. Twenty standard mechs, each customizable with variants and unique attributes, are unlocked progressively.
Reception
Mech Platoon received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic. GameSpot praised its graphics and adherence to real-time strategy standards on a portable system. GameSpy commended the level selection and detailed graphics. Criticism targeted the sound, described as ear-wrenching midi music with some crisp digitized effects, and issues inherent to portable real-time strategy. GameSpy unfavorably compared it to turn-based strategy games like Advance Wars.
