Gameplay
The game is set in a world where humans have become monsters who battle in arenas. Players must navigate a maze and defeat all opponents within a time limit to clear a level. Enemies can be defeated by pushing blocks into them or using weapons such as a bomb, gun, or bowl. Touching an opponent or being hit by a pushed block costs a life. Enemy types move at different speeds. Power-ups include alarm clocks that freeze enemies and the ability to jump over blocks. The game has 40 levels across 5 planets, each ending with a boss battle, and uses a password save system. A multiplayer mode supports up to four players via the Game Link Cable.
Reception
Planet Monsters received mixed or average reviews according to Metacritic. Critics compared it to Pengo, Pac-Man, and Bomberman, with Edge calling it a brazen reworking of those concepts. Simon Brew of Game Boy Extreme found it simple, fun, and addictive but unoriginal and repetitive. Game Informer praised its inventive levels and boss battles as a good mix of strategy and reflexes. Edge critiqued a lack of variety, while Skyler Miller of Allgame considered it unfocused and strictly average, with a bland single-player mode inferior to multiplayer. Gerald Villoria of Gamespot noted clever theory and adequate execution but cited flaws including a long startup splash screen, no save function, and shoddy presentation.
