Lore & Background
When the Harkonnens, secretly reinforced by the Emperor's Sardaukar, destroy House Atreides on Arrakis, Thufir is taken prisoner. Baron Vladimir Harkonnen keeps him as a replacement for his dead Mentat Piter De Vries, feeds him false data that blames Lady Jessica for the betrayal, and has him given a lingering poison that needs a regular antidote. Thufir still works against the Harkonnens from inside, setting the Baron's nephew Feyd-Rautha against his uncle and then warning the Baron of the assassination attempt. Ordered at last to kill Paul Atreides, he is offered anything he wants by a grateful Paul, and he chooses to die of the poison rather than betray him.
