Story

The opening cinematic is narrated by Paul Atreides, who reveals a vision of an alternate timeline where he is never born; Lady Jessica instead gives birth to a daughter, Ariste. Jessica is trained as a Truthsayer and uncovers Dr. Wellington Yueh's treachery, preventing the original novel's events. House Atreides survives under Duke Leto and becomes embroiled in a protracted War of Assassins with House Harkonnen on Arrakis, while the Fremen have disappeared after a Sardaukar purge. The player character is an undercover Bene Gesserit agent who must find the Fremen and wake the Sleeper.

Development

Funcom, developer of Conan Exiles and Anarchy Online, created Dune: Awakening with co-developer NUKKLEAR, which assisted with vehicular gameplay. In February 2019, Funcom announced a partnership with Legendary Entertainment to produce three Dune games over six years, including an open-world multiplayer title. The game uses Unreal Engine 5 and was officially announced in August 2022. It released for Windows on June 10, 2025; Deluxe or Ultimate Edition purchasers gained access on June 5.

Funcom plans PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S releases. The game features periodic free content update Chapters advancing the main story, alongside optional paid DLC. The Deluxe and Ultimate editions include a Season Pass for the first four paid DLCs. The first content update, Chapter 2 and DLC The Lost Harvest, released on September 9, 2025, expanding the player's origin story and adding a Dicycle ground vehicle, the Treadwheel, and Dune Man building pieces.
