Chani
The Fremen wife who carried his name while history called her concubine.
Chani is a central figure in Frank Herbert's Dune novels, serving as the Fremen wife and legal concubine of protagonist Paul Atreides. Born to Imperial Planetologist Liet-Kynes and his Fremen wife Faroula, she becomes the mother of twins Ghanima and Leto II. While known for her fierce loyalty, Chani also acts as a grounding force for Paul amidst his rise as Muad'Dib. Her story spans from their first meeting in the deep desert to her tragic death during childbirth twelve years later in Dune Messiah. The character's legacy continues through the resurrected ghola version appearing in Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune.

Background
In Dune (1965), Chani appears first in Paul's prescient dreams before they meet on Arrakis. After Duke Leto is killed by the Harkonnens, she is tasked with protecting and guiding Paul and Lady Jessica into the deep desert. Already a talented warrior, she becomes deadly after training in the Bene Gesserit "weirding way" alongside Paul and Jessica. The couple shares a tragic loss when their first child, also named Leto II, is killed as an infant during a Corrino raid. To secure political peace with House Corrino, Paul takes Princess Irulan as his official wife, relegating Chani to the role of concubine. However, Paul reassures her that Irulan will have only the name while Chani holds his heart: "That woman over there will be my wife and you but a concubine... Yet that princess shall have no more of me than my name." Jessica adds that history would call women like Chani wives.
Did You Know?
- Princess Irulan secretly fed Chani contraceptives to prevent her from conceiving an heir, but Chani eventually became pregnant by switching to an ancient Fremen diet.
- Chani's death during childbirth is described as less painful than the possible futures Paul foresaw for her had she survived.
