Scytale

Tleilaxu Face Dancer who plotted to dethrone Paul Atreides.

Scytale is a Tleilaxu Face Dancer who conspired to dethrone Paul Atreides in Dune Messiah. His plot involved Spacing Guild Navigator Edric, Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother Mohiam, and Princess Irulan. Unlike later Face Dancers, Scytale held a rank and trust among the Tleilaxu that allowed high-level dealings. He understood Paul's plight and feared an uncontrolled Jihad, seeking a calculated removal. Scytale killed and assumed the appearance of Lichna, daughter of Fremen commando Otheym, to lure Paul to a house where an atomic weapon was planted. The blast blinded Paul but did not kill him. Scytale later offered Paul a ghola of his concubine Chani in exchange for the empire, but Paul refused and killed Scytale with a thrown crysknife. Five thousand years later, a ghola of Scytale appeared as a Tleilaxu Master and councillor to Tylwyth Waff.

Lady Jessica

Lady Jessica is the concubine of Duke Leto and mother of Paul and Alia. A member of the Bene Gesserit, she was instructed to bear a daughter to further their breeding program but disobeyed out of love, giving Leto a son. This misstep sets the Atreides bloodline on a fateful course. Pregnant with Alia, Jessica flees with Paul after House Atreides is destroyed by Baron Harkonnen's forces.

With the Fremen, she and Paul exploit religious legends planted by the Bene Gesserit, casting themselves as messiah and mother. Jessica undergoes the Fremen spice agony, becoming a Reverend Mother and unlocking Other Memory, but the ritual subjects the unborn Alia to overwhelming awareness. In Children of Dune, Jessica returns to Arrakis and finds Alia, regent for Paul's twins, possessed. She escapes an assassination attempt by Alia and trains Farad'n, grandson of Shaddam IV, in Bene Gesserit ways. Jessica has been portrayed by Francesca Annis, Saskia Reeves, Alice Krige, and Rebecca Ferguson.

Leto I Atreides

Duke Leto Atreides, governor of Caladan, takes over spice mining on Arrakis at Emperor Shaddam IV's behest, knowing it is a trap but unable to refuse. He seeks an alliance with the Fremen, recognizing their potential. Accompanied by his concubine Lady Jessica and son Paul, Leto is threatened by his growing influence among the Landsraad. Shaddam allies with Baron Harkonnen, who attacks with Sardaukar and the traitorous doctor Wellington Yueh, devastating the Atreides.

Leto is captured and dies trying to kill the Baron. Described as "regal and doomed" and "warmly protective but all-too-vulnerable," Leto has been portrayed by Jürgen Prochnow, William Hurt, and Oscar Isaac. Prochnow was called "mesmerizing" with "a commanding screen presence." Hurt, a fan of the novel, said the adaptation captured Herbert's prophetic reflection.

Isaac was noted for exuding "righteous honor." Funko produced a POP! figure of Leto in armor styled after the 2021 film, and Aug Toys released a 1/6 scale figurine. A Lego Dune playset includes a Leto minifigure. Leto also appears in the prequel trilogies Prelude to Dune and The Caladan Trilogy.
