Baron Vladimir Harkonnen
A decadent gasbag of depravity whose suspensors could not hold back the tide of Fremen vengeance.
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is the primary antagonist of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune, serving as the Siridar Baron and head of House Harkonnen. Born between 10,110 and 10,193, he is a direct-line male descendant of Bashar Abulurd Harkonnen, who was banished after the Battle of Corrin. The character is famously described in Appendix IV as "grossly and immensely fat," requiring anti-gravity suspensors to support his weight. A figure of legendary evil and intellect, he amasses wealth through manipulation of the whale fur market before consolidating power with melange profits from Arrakis. Portrayed by Kenneth McMillan, Ian McNeice, and Stellan Skarsgård across various adaptations, Harkonnen is a cunning, sadistic manipulator who feigns outrage while conspiring to destroy House Atreides.

Background
Frank Herbert conceived the name "Harkonnen" after finding "Härkönen" in a California telephone book, intending a harsh, Soviet-sounding name for the family opposing House Atreides, though it is actually Finnish. In earlier drafts, the character was named Valdemar Hoskanner. The Baron's sexual preferences are implied to include a predilection for young men and pederasty, yet he once permitted himself to be seduced by Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam.
This liaison produced his secret daughter, Lady Jessica, the mother of Paul Atreides. Mohiam later infected him with a rare, incurable disease causing his obesity as retribution after he drugged and raped her during a second attempt at conception. His legacy is one of ruthless cruelty; he is described by The A.V. Club as a "monstrous gasbag of depravity" and by IGN as "cruel, sadistic, and hedonistic." In the prequel series Prelude to Dune, it is established that Vladimir was chosen over his half-brother Abulurd, who later became governor of Lankiveil under the name Abulurd Rabban.
