Yamcha's story begins in the desert where he ambushed travelers like Bulma, Goku, and Oolong. After joining Master Roshi, he overcame his fear of women through his relationship with Bulma and trained to become a superhuman capable of flight, energy manipulation, and sensing ki. He mastered the Rōgafūfūken (Wolf Fang Windy Fist) and the Sōkidan (Spirit Ball), alongside the Kamehameha. Yamcha competed in the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Tenkaichi Budōkai but lost in the first round each time to Jackie Chun, Tien Shinhan, and Shen respectively. His life took a tragic turn during the Saiyan invasion when he was killed by a self-destructing Saibaman. In the afterlife, he trained under King Kai, witnessing battles on Planet Namek before being resurrected. He later appeared as a baseball player for the West City Titans in anime filler, a concept suggested by Toriyama.

After his death against the Saibaman, he returned to life via Porunga and lived at Capsule Corp with Bulma before their relationship ended. During the Android arc, he was the first to encounter Androids #19 and #20, surviving only after a Senzu bean healed him from having his chest pierced. He joined Tien Shinhan to protect Goku during the Cell Games but lost to the Cell Juniors. In the alternate timeline, he died fighting Androids. By the 25th Tenkaichi Budōkai, he had retired from fighting to spectate. Later, Majin Buu killed him again by turning him into chocolate and eating him, though he was revived by Namekian Dragon Balls to contribute energy to Goku's Genki-Dama. In Dragon Ball Super, he attended Bulma's birthday party, witnessed Goku fight Beerus, captained the Universe 7 baseball team against Universe 6 using his 'Wolf Fang Pitching Fist,' and assisted in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc by defeating Saganbo's goons before lending energy to help Goku awaken Mastered Ultra Instinct.
