Devil May Cry (video game)
The 2001 original: Dante, Trish and Mundus on Mallet Island.
Devil May Cry is a 2001 action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 2. Set on a remote island, it follows Dante, a demon hunter whose business fronts a lifelong vendetta against all demons, as a woman named Trish takes him to Mallet Island to defeat the demon lord Mundus, who is responsible for the deaths of his mother and brother. Conceived as a possible Resident Evil 4 before becoming its own title, it is loosely based on Dante's Divine Comedy through allusions such as Dante, Trish (Beatrice) and Nelo Angelo (Virgil). It sold more than three million copies, spawned sequels, a prequel and two animated series, and is considered among the greatest video games ever made and the start of the 'character action' subgenre.

Background
The game opens with Trish attacking Dante in his office as a test, then explaining that Mundus is about to cross into the human world after centuries of imprisonment. On Mallet Island, Dante explores Mundus's castle, gaining the sword Alastor and the gauntlets Ifrit and defeating the demon's servants: the spider-scorpion Phantom, the bird Griffon, the bioweapon Nightmare and the dark knight Nelo Angelo, who turns out to be Dante's brainwashed twin Vergil.
When Vergil seemingly dies, the amulet halves join and Force Edge becomes the Sparda sword. Trish betrays Dante as Mundus's spy but takes a fatal blow meant for him, unleashing Dante's full power; he defeats Mundus, and when the weakened emperor crosses over, Trish's magic in Dante's guns lets him banish Mundus back to the demon world. The two escape by biplane as the island sinks, and after the credits the business has been renamed Devil Never Cry.
