Devil May Cry 5

Nero, Dante and V against the Demon King Urizen in Red Grave City.

Devil May Cry 5 is a 2019 action-adventure game developed and published by Capcom, the fifth mainline entry in the series and the sixth overall. Returning protagonists Nero and Dante are hired by a mysterious stranger named V to stop the Demon King Urizen, and players control all three, each with a different playstyle. Directed by Hideaki Itsuno and written by Bingo Morihashi, it uses the RE Engine for a more realistic look, with real people used for the characters' faces and a setting based on locations in London. Released for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One on 8 March 2019, it was praised for its gameplay and narrative and became the best-selling game in the franchise, with 14.24 million units sold as of June 2026.

Background

After Devil May Cry 4, Nero works for Dante's agency with the gunsmith Nico when a hooded stranger rips off his Devil Bringer, which becomes the Yamato. V then hires Dante's crew to take down Urizen in Red Grave City, where a demonic tree, the Qliphoth, is draining people of blood. Urizen defeats them all, shattering Dante's Rebellion and capturing Lady and Trish. A month later Nero returns with Nico's Devil Breaker prosthetic; V reveals that he and Urizen are the human and demon halves of Vergil, separated by the Yamato.

Dante absorbs Rebellion and the Devil Sword Sparda to forge the Devil Sword Dante and defeats Urizen, but the dying V merges with him, restoring Vergil. Dante reveals that Vergil is Nero's father; Nero awakens his full demonic power, regrows his arm and stops the brothers' duel, and Dante and Vergil descend into the Underworld to cut the Qliphoth down, leaving Nero in charge of the world above. An expanded Special Edition with Vergil playable launched with the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 in November 2020, and a Nintendo Switch 2 version, the Devil Hunter Edition, followed in June 2026.
