Smith's butterflyfish
A rare butterflyfish endemic to remote South Pacific islands.
Smith's butterflyfish (*Chaetodon smithi*) is a marine ray-finned fish in the butterflyfish family, Chaetodontidae. It lives only in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.
The front half of its body and fins are dark brown, while the rear half and fins are yellow. The soft-rayed parts of the dorsal and anal fins have blue edges. The line between the two color blocks is uneven, and the dorsal fin spines are yellow even over the brown front section. This fish can reach a total length of 18 to 19 centimeters (7.1 to 7.5 inches).
Its range is limited to the British Overseas Territory of Pitcairn Island, Rapa Iti and Marotiri (the Ilots de Basse) in French Polynesia, and one confirmed sighting from Easter Island.
It lives on rocky reefs with thick algae growth and at least some coral. Often found in large groups in the middle of the water column, it feeds on zooplankton. This species lays eggs and forms pairs to breed.
American ichthyologist John Ernest Randall described the species in 1975. The type location is off Young's Rock, Pitcairn Island. The type specimens were collected by C. Lavett Smith, Jr., of the American Museum of Natural History, and Randall named the fish after him.
Though extremely rare in the aquarium trade, it does appear occasionally. The Waikiki Aquarium keeps it on display.
