Spring training began with the team's equipment leaving Fenway Park on February 2, known as "Truck Day," heading to Fort Myers. The Red Sox opened their Grapefruit League slate on February 20 against Northeastern, finishing with a 13–16 record. Several players missed full spring preparation due to the World Baseball Classic (March 5–17), where Anthony and Whitlock represented the U.S., while Abreu, Contreras, and Suárez won championships for Venezuela. On August 3, the roster underwent major changes: Enddy Azócar, Anthony Eyanson, Carlos Narváez, Kyson Witherspoon, and a player to be named later were traded to Baltimore for Adley Rutschman and Jake Rogers. Simultaneously, Tyler Uberstine went to Atlanta for Eli White, and Marcelo Mayer was sent to San Francisco for Erik Miller and Carlos Gutierrez.
