Lore & Background

After a 10–17 start, the Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora on April 25. Triple-A Worcester Red Sox manager Chad Tracy was named interim manager. On July 22, the team won its 15th straight game to tie the franchise record set by the 1946 Red Sox. The Red Sox' 21–4 record in July set a new franchise record for highest monthly winning percentage.

In Their Own Story

The bottom of the ninth in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS was thick with tension as the Red Sox trailed the Yankees 4–3. Mariano Rivera, New York’s closer, took the mound while Kevin Millar stepped into the batter’s box. After Millar drew a walk, Dave Roberts entered as a pinch runner and immediately stole second base, a daring play that shifted momentum irrevocably. The steal set up David Ortiz, who tied the game with an RBI single. In extra innings, Ortiz delivered another clutch hit to win the game 6–4 in the 12th inning. This victory sparked a historic comeback: Boston won Games 5, 6, and 7 to complete the first-ever 3–0 series reversal in major league postseason history. The team then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, capturing their first championship since 1918.
