The MPT originated from the Mehmetçik-1 prototype built in 2008, chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO. Turkish soldiers testing it reported a preference for the 7.62×51mm NATO round due to its greater stopping power and range, similar to the existing G3 service rifles. The Mehmetçik-1 was cancelled after the first prototype, and engineers began a redesign. The MPT made its first public appearance at Eurosatory 2014, ADEX 2014, and MSPO 2014. The first batch of 200 MPT-76s was delivered on 18 May 2014 and received positive feedback, with soldiers reporting it extremely accurate and reliable, outmatching the G3 in all categories. Serial production began in 2015, with an initial phase of 35,014 MPT-76s contracted in two tranches: 20,000 to MKEK in June 2015 and 15,014 to Kalekalip in December 2015. The first batch was ready for delivery in January 2017, and approximately 25,000 MPT-76s had been built by December 2018, with an order for over 350,000 more in 2019.

The MPT is an AR-15–style rifle with a gas piston system based on the HK417, featuring a Picatinny rail system and mounting options for an under-barrel shotgun and grenade launcher. It was designed to endure prolonged combat without maintenance in adverse environments. The MPT-76 has ergonomic deviations from traditional AR-10 rifles: the HK417-inspired buttstock must be rotated counter-clockwise about 30 degrees to adjust length of pull, and an angled foregrip-style plastic mount bridges the lower receiver and handguard, requiring removal for disassembly. The charging handle has the retaining latch on the right side, not the left.

Variants include the MPT-76-MH (lightened by 750 g), MPT-68 (chambered in 6.8×51mm ammunition, a 2026 variant), MPT-55 (5.56×45mm NATO, released 2017, with standard and K models), KNT-76 (designated marksman rifle, semi-automatic, 800 m effective range, 1.5 MOA accuracy, 500 g heavier than MPT-76), and KAAN-717 (carbine in 7.62×51mm NATO, short-stroke action, different stock with cheek rest). Users include Turkey (66,000 MPT-76 and MPT-55s as of 2019), Northern Cyprus, Chad, Georgia, Kosovo, Libya, Peru, and Somalia.
