Kyoshi's life is defined by the tension between her duty as the Avatar and the personal betrayals she endured. One year after discovery, she was summoned by Fire Lord Zoryu to address a famine and his half-brother Chaejin's coup attempt. During a royal banquet, Kyoshi reunites with her lover Rangi only to be attacked by Yun, who seeks revenge on those who lied about him being the Avatar. Yun kills several palace guards before escaping, leading Kyoshi to deduce that Father Glowworm has possessed him. To aid her, she travels to North Chung-Ling to consult Nyahitha, Kuruk's former companion. Despite efforts to contact Kuruk's spirit, a message reading "Hail Fire Lord Chaejin" is burned into local farmland, sparking a full-scale battle between Zoryu and Chaejin's supporters.

Kyoshi, Rangi, and Hei-Ran defuse tensions between Zoryu's forces and Chaejin's henchmen led by Huazo. When Yun attacks Hei-Ran during the chaos, Kyoshi chooses to save her friend rather than pursue him, a decision she later regrets. She deduces Yun is working with Chaejin, but upon capturing both leaders, Avatar Kuruk's spirit admonishes her; they are not actually allied with Yun. Fire Lord Zoryu plans to execute an imposter of Yun and purge Chaejin's clan to stop the war, prompting Kyoshi to rescue the fake. She travels to a spiritually charged island ruin where she finally communicates directly with Kuruk. The Water Avatar shows her a memory of his confrontation with Father Glowworm, revealing that while Yun merged with the spirit, he remains in total control. Pursuing Yun to their deceased mentor Jianzhu's estate, Kyoshi faces him in a final battle alongside Rangi and the Flying Opera Company, ultimately killing him.
