Kyoshi's life is defined by the complex fallout of being misidentified as the Earth Avatar, a role that originally belonged to Yun. After discovering she is the true Avatar one year later, Kyoshi travels the world attempting to decipher the pleas for help from her predecessor, Avatar Kuruk. The narrative centers on the political turmoil in the Fire Nation, where Fire Lord Zoryu faces famine and a coup attempt by his older half-brother Chaejin. Kyoshi is summoned to aid Zoryu, reuniting with her friend and lover Rangi along the way. The story introduces Father Glowworm, a spirit who possessed Yun after he was presumed dead. This entity drives Yun's transformation into a vengeful figure seeking revenge on those who lied to him about his identity, including Rangi's mother, Hei-Ran.

In Their Own Story

The plot escalates when Yun attacks a banquet at the royal palace, killing several guards before escaping, leading Kyoshi to conclude Father Glowworm has possessed him. Kyoshi, Rangi, and Hei-Ran travel to North Chung-Ling to consult Nyahitha, Kuruk's former companion, who attempts to guide Kyoshi into the Spirit World with little success. Tensions explode when a message reading "Hail Fire Lord Chaejin" is burned into local farmland, sparking a battle between Zoryu and Chaejin's supporters. During the chaos, Yun attacks Hei-Ran; Kyoshi saves her but fails to pursue Yun, realizing he is working with Chaejin. Although Kyoshi captures Huazo and Chaejin, Avatar Kuruk's spirit admonishes her when she threatens them, revealing they are not actually allied with Yun. Zoryu arrests a Yun imposter for execution to stop the war, prompting Kyoshi to rescue him while Zoryu warns that finding the real Yun is critical. In the ruins of an island charged with spiritual energy, Kyoshi finally communicates directly with Kuruk, who shows her a memory of Father Glowworm. The Water Avatar reveals that while Yun merged with the spirit and consumed its powers, he remains in total control of his actions.

The climax occurs at the estate of their deceased former mentor, Jianzhu, Kyoshi's childhood home. There, she confronts a completely deranged and vengeful Yun, who swears to kill everyone who falsely worshipped him as the Avatar. With no other choice, Kyoshi engages him in a final battle alongside Rangi and her former companions from the Flying Opera Company, ultimately killing Yun. In the aftermath, Fire Lord Zoryu intends to purge Chaejin's entire clan but is stopped by Kyoshi through her old mentor, Lao Ge. This confrontation shifts the political landscape entirely: Zoryu decides to strip all clans of influence, establishing the Fire Lord as the supreme ruler. The story emphasizes the mental and emotional toll of being an Avatar, presenting a darker, more tragic ending than typical franchise entries.
