Marlowe Freudenberg

Background

In the anime he shows his leadership differently, standing up to two corrupt superiors who are selling guns on the black market, and Annie encourages him to keep gathering his strength. After the battle between the Female Titan and the Attack Titan, he and Hitch are seen cleaning up the dead.

In a later manga storyline Marlowe, on patrol, defends the Survey Corps for having caught a Titan, something no other military faction has managed. When Levi's squad captures him and Hitch, Marlowe offers to help, but Levi refuses because they cannot be trusted and leaves the pair in Jean's custody. Jean tests him with a brief fist fight; Marlowe tells Hitch to run while he holds Jean off, and after a while Jean decides he can be trusted, noting that his want for justice resembles Eren's, just as Annie had observed. Hitch comes back and attacks Jean anyway, still thinking he means to kill Marlowe, before Marlowe explains it was only a test.

He is among the soldiers who transfer into the Survey Corps to shore up its dwindling numbers, despite Hitch trying to talk him out of it, and he is oblivious to her obvious feelings for him, which Eren's group teases him about at dinner. He appears to realise he returns those feelings shortly before he is killed in the attempt to retake Wall Maria, struck in the head by a rock while distracting the Beast Titan so that Levi can ambush it.
