Ymir Fritz

The first Titan, whose spirit bound a nation in chains for two thousand years.

Ymir Fritz is the primordial progenitor of all Subjects of Ymir and the first being to wield the power of the Titans. Once a nameless slave, she gained the power of the Founding Titan after merging with a mysterious organism, and used it to build the Eldian Empire under King Fritz. However, her story is one of profound tragedy: for two thousand years after her death, her spirit remained trapped in a dimension called the Paths, blindly obeying the Royal Bloodline. Her existence is the root of Eldia's global conflict, embodying the paradox of a savior who built a nation while remaining its most enduring prisoner.

Lore & Background

For two millennia, Ymir's consciousness lingered in the Paths, trapped not by physical chains but by a psychological prison of her own making. When Eren and Zeke reach the Coordinate, Eren convinces her to aid him of her own free will in exterminating all life outside Paradis, and when his former allies interfere she revives the Titan forms of past shifters against them.

Reader's Guide

Ymir Fritz serves as the emotional and mythological anchor of Attack on Titan, representing the origin of both humanity's greatest weapon and its deepest trauma. Initially a mythical figure of worship, her true narrative reveals a victim of severe abuse who gained godhood yet remained mentally enslaved for two thousand years. Her power as the Founding Titan allows absolute control over all Subjects of Ymir and Titans through the Paths dimension. Her journey is defined by three pivotal moments: merging with the Source of All Living Matter in a moment of desperation, sacrificing herself to protect King Fritz from an assassin, and her millennia-long servitude in the Paths.
