Annie Leonhart

The comrade who turned out to be an enemy, sealing herself in crystal to survive.

Annie Leonhart is introduced as a fellow military comrade of Eren Yeager and his companions. While initially presented as a stoic recruit with exceptional combat skills, she harbors a devastating secret: she is one of the Nine Titans, specifically the sentient Female Titan. Her infiltration of humanity's defenses was part of a larger mission to reclaim the Founding Titan for her people outside the walls. This deception drives one of the series' most pivotal conflicts: after she ambushes the 57th expedition in Titan form, Armin works out who she is and she is exposed in the Stohess District.

Lore & Background

Annie's secret was exposed following a confrontation with Eren and his companions during an expedition into the forest between the walls. There, they encountered the sentient Female Titan, which was later revealed to be Annie herself. After a fierce battle where she fought to protect her identity, Annie found herself cornered by Eren and his friends. To avoid interrogation after her defeat, she turned to the hardening ability that many Titan Shifters share. She encased her entire form in crystal, creating an impenetrable barrier that left her trapped in a state of suspended animation.

Reader's Guide

Annie Leonhart is identified as the sentient Female Titan, one of the Nine Titans known for their ability to shift between human and Titan form. As a Titan Shifter, she can harden parts of her body at will, making them nearly impenetrable. Her transformation was triggered after being revealed as an enemy combatant during the expedition in the forest between the walls. Upon defeat by Eren Yeager and his companions, she utilized her hardening ability to encase herself in crystal, after which she was put in custody.
