Background
In the series' alternate history he is born in 1693 to an English father and a Welsh mother in a family of farmers. Wanting a better life, he becomes a privateer and then a pirate in the Caribbean in the last decades of the Golden Age of Piracy, and he helps set up a short-lived Pirate Republic.
He is drawn into the war between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order, at first helping both sides for his own gain. After a change of heart he joins the Assassins when he retires from piracy, settles in London as one of the leaders of its Brotherhood, and is murdered by the Templars in 1735.
Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway, the grandfather of Connor and an ancestor of Desmond Miles. He is praised for his charm and his morally ambiguous, self-made character, and is one of the most popular characters of the series.
