Dead or Alive 3
Third main entry in the Dead or Alive fighting series.
Dead or Alive 3 is a fighting game released in 2001, developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo. It launched alongside the Xbox console as one of its initial titles, serving as the third main installment in the Dead or Alive series after Dead or Alive 2 (1999). The game enhanced both its gameplay and visuals with greater detail than its predecessors. Its story follows DOATEC's Omega Project, which aims to create the ultimate human weapon by capturing Genra, leader of the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan's Hajin Mon sect, and transforming him into the evil superhuman Omega. The ninjas enter the third Dead or Alive tournament to stop him.
Upon release, Dead or Alive 3 received critical acclaim and strong commercial sales. It sold approximately 1.5 million units worldwide as of 2005, making it a solid performer for the franchise. It won several awards and received multiple nominations. The European and Japanese versions launched months later, containing minor balance tweaks and a few new moves, though not a flood of new attacks.
In 2005, the game became backward compatible on Xbox 360. In 2021, all versions became available for download worldwide via Xbox Live, and later gained backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The series continued with Dead or Alive Ultimate in 2004 and Dead or Alive 4 in 2005.
**Gameplay**
The core controls remain largely unchanged from Dead or Alive 2. Adjustments include longer counter windows, unrestricted three-dimensional movement, and reduced emphasis on juggling combos. These changes make the game more accessible for beginners and soften the artificial intelligence. Move properties for character attacks have been updated. Counter holds now deal less damage, encouraging players to rely more on strikes and throws. Fighters caught in hazardous falls can be knocked out if their health is very low.
A new Sparring mode feature called "Exercise" provides an automatic command tutorial. One command appears on-screen at a time during gameplay and changes after successful execution, allowing players to practice character moves while the commands are displayed.
The Tag team system from the previous game has been updated. Tag Battle matches are now available in Time Attack and Survival modes.
