The Horus Heresy is a galaxy-spanning civil war set in the 31st millennium, 10,000 years before the main Warhammer 40,000 setting, and is treated as a major cause of that setting's dystopia. It is the subject of The Horus Heresy, a series of novels by several authors published by the Black Library, a Games Workshop division.
