The Great Heathen Army, described in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as the "mycel heathen here", captured York in 866/867, marking the start of Scandinavian rule.[1][2] In 954, the Battle of Stainmore resulted in Eric Bloodaxe's death at the hands of Eadred's forces, ending Scandinavian domination.[3]

What happened

After a failed Anglo-Saxon counterattack on 21 March 867, the Northumbrian leaders made peace with the Vikings.[4][5] Scandinavian rule continued through several kings until Eric Bloodaxe was killed in 954.[3] From the early 7th century, the Angles occupied the settlement, which subsequently became part of Northumbria after Deira was taken over by Bernicia in 655.[6] A Viking army arrived in East Anglia in 865 with the goal of conquest, not merely raiding.[1]

What the cited sources add

The Cuerdale Hoard, a 19th-century find in the Ribble Valley, contained about 8,000 Anglo-Scandinavian coins plus continental and Islamic coins.[7] Coin evidence from this hoard provides the names of rulers such as Siefredus and Cnut.[7][8] Coins minted under Ragnall I bear the names RAIENALT or RACNOLDT.[9]
