Badwater Basin, at 282 feet below sea level, is the second-lowest depression in the Western Hemisphere (after Laguna del Carbón in Argentina). Just 85 miles (137 km) to the west, Mount Whitney rises to 14,505 feet (4,421 m), the tallest peak in the contiguous U.S. This gives the area the greatest elevation gradient in the contiguous states and marks the southwestern drainage endpoint of the Great Basin.
