1961 Tour de France
Anquetil promised yellow from day one to Paris, and delivered.
The 1961 Tour de France was the 48th edition, held from 25 June to 16 July over 21 stages and 4,397 km; 132 riders started and 72 finished. Two riders from the French national team, André Darrigade and Jacques Anquetil, held the yellow jersey for all 21 stages. Anquetil, who had not managed to repeat his 1957 win because of illness, tiredness and quarrels within the team, had asked team captain Marcel Bidot for a squad that would ride only for him, and announced before the start that he would take the jersey on the first day and keep it to Paris. The fight for the other podium places went to the last day, when Guido Carlesi took second from Charly Gaul by two seconds. The previous winner, Gastone Nencini, did not ride.
