1966 Tour de France
Anquetil's domestique wins, with Anquetil pulling for him to spite Poulidor.
The 1966 Tour de France was the 53rd edition, held from 21 June to 14 July over 22 stages and 4,329 km. Lucien Aimar, a domestique of five-time winner Jacques Anquetil, joined a breakaway mid-race and rode onto the leaderboard; Anquetil then worked for Aimar's victory to deny the race to his enemy Raymond Poulidor, rode hard on stage 18 to make it safe, and quit. Willy Planckaert won the points classification and Julio Jiménez the mountains. Word of a dope test sent many riders out of their hotels to avoid it, and on stage nine the peloton staged a protest strike, dismounting and walking before arguing with officials and riding on. Trade teams of ten rode, at least six of each sharing a nationality.
