1962 Tour de France
Trade teams return, Anquetil makes it three, Simpson makes history in yellow.
The 1962 Tour de France was the 49th edition, a 4,274 km race of 22 stages, two of them split, from Nancy on 24 June to the Parc des Princes in Paris on 15 July, with four time trials and no rest days. After more than thirty years the race was again ridden by trade teams rather than national teams. Jacques Anquetil defended his title to win his third Tour; Jef Planckaert was second at 4 min 59 s and Raymond Poulidor third, more than ten minutes down. The yellow jersey passed from Anquetil's teammate Rudi Altig to André Darrigade and back, then to Albertus Geldermans, Darrigade again and Willy Schroeders, whose Flandria leader Rik Van Looy abandoned injured; the next day Tom Simpson became the first rider from outside mainland Europe to wear it.
